While the rest of the aviation industry has taken advantage of the internet, private aviation flights are still primarily booked through numerous phone calls or email exchanges with brokers. Stellar brings private business aviation into the digital age. Through a year-long engagement, I helped create consumer-facing mobile and desktop applications to book private flights in minutes, as well as a system that allows operators to search, book, and manage flights for their customers.

Stellar is a private travel marketplace for successful professionals and prominent individuals for whom time is their most valuable asset. For our target audience, private air travel is a utility with a focus on speed and functionality. They have an expectation of the highest quality of service and demand simple handling of complex logistics. To express our understanding of our customers and to guide our design process, we created four Experience Principles:
Pleasurable: Stellar should feel fast, efficient and effortless (so that customers can optimize their travel time).
Precise: Every component of Stellar should have scientific precision and a singular focus.
Orchestrated: All of the moving parts within the Stellar system should work seamlessly and collaboratively toward a common goal.
Intelligent: Stellar should express its high-tech heritage by hinting at the complexity of the algorithms that make it possible.

After exploring many design concepts for the Stellar product suite, the idea of Material Science emerged as the strongest. Intended to reference the high-tech structure of powerful satellite dishes or the futuristic mesh skin of spaceships, the entire app and web system is based on an opaque, tense material guided by a rigid framework underneath. The framework leverages five classical elements in strategic ways:
Tension: Surface tension creates a canvas for key visual and interactive elements.
Depth: The focal plane lets all relevant information rise above while obscuring, but still hinting at, the complexity underneath.
Light: Ambient light dynamically impacts the surface while crisp lighting delineates specific areas of focus for the user.
Color: Color is imparted upon the neutral surface to draw attention to areas of information and action.
Shape: As elements from the framework below are brought into focus, their solid, precision shapes create focal points and interactive elements.

The massive set of over 100 wireframed screens (for the app alone) served as our source of truth while the visual language was being developed. The interaction models developed for the Stellar App were designed to radically simplify the process of booking a flight.
